what do you do? I make everything you see when you visit a website, not the things that go on behind the scenes. In other words, I make a usable, meaningful website out of an image of the page's design. I work primarily with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Django.
what's the best part about your job? I love that my job involves both design and programming, because I like both of them. I also like that there is more than one way to make every web page. Because of this, I get to decide the best way to make each page and I can really take pride in the quality of my work. I also love the creating that I do for each webpage. It's amazing to make out of nothing a website that people can see and use.
how did you get here? Since I was a child I enjoyed (among other things) mathematics, using computers, and looking at books on design, especially interior design and architecture. I went to Saint Mary's College primarily for their mathematics program. After taking an Intro to Programming course that was required for math majors, I was hooked on programming early in my college career and decided to change my major to an integrated program of mathematics and computer science. I liked how changing and exciting the internet was, and I wanted to explore web development. The summer before my senior year in college I interned for one:ten and was able to explore the many facets of programming that go into making a website. During my internship I thoroughly enjoyed working on front-end development. After that summer I decided that I wanted to work in web development. I was drawn to one:ten because of its mission and because of the great people that work for one:ten and the LaSalle Company. A few months after graduating from Saint Mary's College I started working at one:ten.
the interesting stuff: I love being with people, so the things that I do outside of work are my favorite because of the people I do them with and not necessarily based on the activity. I like taking bike rides, especially to the local library to check out books on whatever is most interesting to me at the time, and generally being outside running, hiking, staying warm in the snow, or appreciating and taking photos of nature. I love listening to music and going to concerts of all kinds (rock, classical, folk, etc.). I also love tutoring in math.
